# Classify

> Put any website into an IAB category, with a description, tagline, stock tickers and ISINs. 5 credits.

`/classify` reads a website and assigns it an [IAB Content Taxonomy](https://www.iab.com/guidelines/content-taxonomy/) category. Everything sits under `data.classification`, the same key [`/enrich`](https://docs.prefetch.io/company-data/enrich) uses:

* **Category and subcategory:** for example `Business` › `Business Software`
* **Descriptions:** a short description, a one-line tagline and a longer summary
* **Stock tickers and ISINs:** for public companies

Static pages are read with a fast fetch. A real browser is used only when the page needs JavaScript to show its content.

It's the cheapest way to answer "what kind of business is this?", for example to score leads against your ideal customer profile.

## Example requests

```bash cURL theme={"theme":"css-variables"}
curl "https://api.prefetch.io/classify?url=https://stripe.com" \
  -H "X-API-Key: $PREFETCH_API_KEY"
```

```javascript Node.js theme={"theme":"css-variables"}
const res = await fetch("https://api.prefetch.io/classify?url=https://stripe.com", {
  headers: { "X-API-Key": process.env.PREFETCH_API_KEY },
});
const { data } = await res.json();
const { category, subcategory } = data.classification;
console.log(`${category} > ${subcategory}`); // "Business > Business Software"
```

```python Python theme={"theme":"css-variables"}
import os, requests
r = requests.get(
    "https://api.prefetch.io/classify",
    params={"url": "https://stripe.com"},
    headers={"X-API-Key": os.environ["PREFETCH_API_KEY"]},
)
classification = r.json()["data"]["classification"]
print(f"{classification['category']} > {classification['subcategory']}")
```

## Example response

A real response for `stripe.com`, shortened where marked with `…`:

```json theme={"theme":"css-variables"}
{
  "success": true,
  "data": {
    "domain": "stripe.com",
    "url": "https://stripe.com/",
    "classification": {
      "iab_id": "IAB3-4",
      "iab_parent_id": "IAB3",
      "category": "Business",
      "subcategory": "Business Software",
      "description": "A payments and financial-technology platform that lets businesses accept and process online and in-person payments, manage billing and subscriptions, issue cards, and move money across borders via APIs and prebuilt tools. …",
      "tagline_description": "A developer-first payments and financial infrastructure platform for online and in-person commerce.",
      "long_description": "Stripe is a global technology company that provides infrastructure for online payments and financial services. …",
      "stock_tickers": [],
      "isins": []
    }
  },
  "meta": {
    "requestId": "a3f2c1d4-7b6e-4f2a-9c1d-8e3f2a1b4c5d",
    "durationMs": 196
  }
}
```

## IAB IDs

`iab_id` and `iab_parent_id` use the IAB Content Taxonomy 1.0 ID format. The parent is a category, and the child adds a hyphen and a number:

* `IAB3`: the parent category (Business)
* `IAB3-4`: the subcategory (Business Software)

Common parent categories include `IAB3` (Business), `IAB4` (Careers), `IAB13` (Personal Finance) and `IAB19` (Technology & Computing).
